47 Books

47 Books, 1 book at a time

book 4 updateee January 26, 2009

I’ve changed my mind! After thinking about it I decided that if I read 4 YA fiction in a row my brain might explode due to metaphor and life lesson overload. So I’m succumbing to Fantasy, my favourite genre 😀 So this week (or at least after my last exam tomorrow) I will be reading Kingdom Keepers II: Disney at Dawn by Ridley Pearson. I am a huge Disney fan and have been waiting to read this book since I was intrigued and amazed by the first one. So Salinger will have to wait a week… or two.

As always, I need more suggestions for good books, so comment away!

Book 3: PAPER TOWNS January 25, 2009

oh. Wow. I love this book, hands down, and not just because John Green is a hero which is why I thought I might like it. This book is definitely at the top of my YA fiction list and should be on everyone else’s too! Besides the perfect ending, I liked the entire book. The beginning and end are exciting and full of metaphors and themes and ideas, etc. But the middle was entertaining in that it gave me time to think about what was going on instead of just rushing into the next idea. There are so many genius quotations that I could pull from this book, but the ones I like the most are from the scene where Margo and Quentin share epiphanies together. That is the coolest part, when they talk about the different metaphors for understanding. My favourite metaphor was the idea that people can only begin to understand each other when they can see through each others’ cracks. That was jokes.

SPOILER WARNING

Again, the ending was perfect, I wasn’t sure if I should expect a sad ending like Alaska or a happy ending like Katherines, but I kind of got both. Quentin and Margo are both sad that their paths lead them different ways but still happy because they crossed each other. I will definitely buy this book in the near future (if the library wasn’t so convenient, I’d have it already) because I want to have a copy of my own to keep forever. That’s how much I enjoyed it, and I recommend it to all!

Anyways, the next book is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger . My friend just did a project on it and she loved it and now I’m borrowing it from her. It sounds like a good read!

p.s. I’m thinking of starting a youtube channel/vlog, not just for this project but to record all of my projects that I hope to accomplish in 2009. Comments and suggestions are welcome!

I finally finished Looking for Alaska on saturday but unfortunately I have not found the time to blog since then…

I liked the book even though a bit graphic it had great themes. When I finished, I realized that I should have known from the beginning that Alaska was going to die and the ending would not be very happy, like Romeo and Juliet, which I am currently reading for school. Because the second you step away from that line, you’re in for it, and Alaska was miles away from the line, kind of like the state it self from the rest of the U.S. The labyrinth is quite a tricky idea and very intriguing. I still can’t define it exactly but I’ve determined that the labyrinth can have different meanings for different people. For example, Alaska interprets the labyrinth to be something to escape from, while Miles would rather slowly unravel it until his natural ending.

I think this novel will increase my understanding of Romeo and Juliet (or at least I hope because my exam is tomorrow!) and fortune’s fool. Alaska, Miles, and all their friends were fooled by fate and I think that is what triggered their sadness. The weren’t expecting the great impact of their decisions, but with Alaska, you must always expect the unexpected.

Next book: Paper Towns. Normally I would not read both of John’s books in a row but it’s due back at the library!

Better go hit the books, exam time is hours approaching!

p.s. no rush for book this week, exams are important, will catch up in the future.

Book 1: Complete (finally) ! January 10, 2009

Yesterday in science class, I finally finished book number one. I know I’m kinda late, but I should be able to catch up soon!

Note- this post does contain a few spoilers, so if you haven’t read this book this is a warning. :0

When I finished The Book Thief, I just felt so exhausted and not only because I stayed up late the past few nights reading fervently. I was mostly exhausted because the ending drowned me with so many complicated (and mostly sad) thoughts. I mean, mostly everyone dies! Having the main character not die makes it even more sad to think about what she feels like for the rest of her life. My favourite parts of this book were definitely when Liesel sees Max for the last time and when she finally kisses Rudy… even though he is dead. I was reading that part in my school library and to try to retttttuuuuuyfffffgggrreessstrain myself from weeping a little. But if was SO SAD!!! I have to say that I loved the unique style of writing. At first it was confusing because the author jumps around in the story a lot, but then I was like “oh, that’s the ending, i see…” I also like how Death was the narrator, it gives the reader a different perspective and to quote the book: “Death is war’s best friend,” so it really works out to be effective in the story. This is probably one of my favourite books ever now, and I hope to read more by Marcus Zusak (who am I kidding, it’s not like I have 46 more books to read this year) !

My next book, which I started last night, is Looking for Alaska, by YouTube famous nerdfighter John Green. So far, it is not what I expected, but neither was the last book, so -thumbs up-. If you have any questions, random thoughts, or suggestions on more books (preferably the latter lol) leave them in the comments!

DFTBA,

Project 2009: 47 Books!! January 1, 2009

Like a lot of people out there, I love to read. And, as I get older, I know that books will start to be put on the back shelf (no pun intended) of my priorities. I realize now that I don’t want that to happen; so I’ve set a goal that I hope to reach by December 31 2009 at 11:59 p.m. EST or sooner. This year, I vow to read 47 books, which might not seem like a lot to many people, but I’m not a very fast reader and there are only 52 weeks in a year. I don’t want to bore you right now, so I’ll feature the details of this project in another section later. I will use this blog to record my thoughts on each and every book. I hope to get some opinions of the books and suggestions for future reads as well, so comment away!

I better book it for now (pun intended), it’s getting late here. 😉 Wish me luck!

p.s. My first book is The Book Thief. I’ve been wanting to read it for ages and I finally got my hands on it. BTW, does anybody know exactly what genre it is? Suggestions are definitely welcome!
